Frequently Asked Questions related to Plantation Kynam
Q1. Where do you (admin) from?
A1. I am from state of Selangor, Malaysia. I am Tee … reachable through whatsapp +6012 323 1161.
Q2. Why do you plant agarwood tree?
A2. If planting agarwood trees is for the purpose of fulfilling forestation, then, please proceed with any species without hesitation. If planting agarwood trees is for the purpose of making dollars, then, i suggest you a potential species to maximize your profit, ie “ Kynam or Kinam or Qinan or Chi-nam “, you may name it as “cultivated kinam” or “farmed kinam” or “plantation kynam”, as long as it is artificially planted.
Q3. What a Joke of the century, are you telling me Kynam could be artificially planted?
A3. In grandma story … Kynam is the result of various mutations in the agarwood tree, which cannot be artificially grafted and planted. In the script, ancient Kynam is ..
- Extremely old (hundreds of years)
- Wild with no interference of any kind
- When burned goes out in a straight line
- The color of the smoke is greenish … and bla blaaa
So what, history gotta be rewritten when the record is meant to be broken!! For the first time in history, Agriculture Science has managed to encourage farmed Aquilaria trees to produce kynam.
Q4.
A4.
Q5. Can kynam be planted by using seeds?
A5. No. Seed breeding did not work. Kynam is propagated by grafting.

Q6. How much does kynam cost per seedling?
A6. RM160/ seedling, which is equivalent to Usd40/seedling, with MOQ 100 pcs. Price subjected to quantity ordered.
Q7. Why it is so special, being sold that expensive?
A7. When Kynam was first introduced in China 2012, the seedling was sold based on its leaf available, with usd80/ leaf. In Malaysia, i had ever sold upto USD100/ seedling. It is NOT special, but simply limited version. With one seedling, you can multiply it into dozen and so on … by grafting. If you have attrative order to me, i have attractive discount to you too.
Q8. What is the minimum height suitable to be planted in the open field?
A8. >40cm from point of grafting to upper point of highest leaf, 45cm is a norm.
Q9. Where did this kynam come from?
A9. It started in China and from various parts of China. In March 2012, they successfully grafted “1st generation of Kynam” and cultivated the seedling for 2 years. In 2014, the artificial intervention to “1st generation of Kynam “ was initiated
Q10. Can you supply the kynam seedling to India / Philippines / Sri Lanka / Indonesia?
A10. Meet me to discuss.
Q11. How much will you suggest if i would like to grow kynam outside of Malaysia?
A11. Meet me to discuss.
Q12. How much will kynam cost me.

A14.
Q15. What are the most important criteria in grafting?
A15. Scions need to be fresh and rootstocks need to be healthy. The scions to be consumed within 72 hours after cutting from the tree.
Q16. What is the size of seedling suitable for grafting?
A16. Diameter >1.0cm measuring 10cm above ground, and polybag of diameter 12.5cm with soil filling at 15cm height. There is no harm if you get them prepared in larger ones. It is not age dependent, provided the seedlings are not aging.
Q17. What species must the root stock to be?
A17. Plantation kynam started in China, there was only Sinensis available with them, hence Sinensis was chosen originally. However, among those commercially farming Agarwood species, Malaccensis is said to be the strongest one in the root structure. One of the criteria in grafting requires root structure to be stronger, therefore Malaccensis is the best selection.

Q21. How long for the grafted seedling to be planted in field?
A21. 4~5 months should be ready, about 45cm in height.
Q22. How long can i cut the branches for grafting after planted in open field?
A22. I was told technically 30 months.
Q23. How long has plantation kynam started in Malaysia?
A23. It is very new in Malaysia. Last year 2019, there were few growers actively initiated plantation kynam from China, scions and seedlings were flown to Malaysia, the kynam propagation started from sketch.
Q24. How much does kynam wood chips cost?
A24. At present, harvest is carried out within 4~5 years after planting, Kynam wood chips are sold @ USD50/gm ( Sept 2019). But, price in farm is very different from reseller price, so it can be a multiplication of the price by the time it reaches the consumers.

Q25. How fast will Kynam generate resin if planted in Malaysia ?
A25.
Q26. How long to harvest Kynam?
A26. Basically longer the better, in China it is harvested lessor than 5 years. Recommendation …
- 3 years planting + 2 years stressing
- 4 years planting + 2 years stressing
Q27. How many wood chips per tree can be harvested?
A27. Drilling conducted to a 3-4 year tree with diameter…
- Ø6cm, and waited for another 2 years … may yield a harvest of 500~700gm of woodchips.
- Ø11cm, and waited for another 2 years … may yield a harvest of 700~1000gm of woodchips.
(Source : From China 13/09/20)
Climate in Malaysia, harvest at year 5th ~6th is expected to be 800~1000gm / tree.
Q28. How much will plantation Kynam cost in next 10 years?
A28. The efficient formation of these special aroma (active compounds) of cultivated kynam is mainly determined by the genetic background of these trees.
Price of cultivated Kynam is tens of RMB per gram which is much higher than that of ordinary agarwood. Currently, more than 10 million trees of Kynam have been planted in a series site in south China, and their growing environment is the same as the ordinary A. sinensis.
I can not speculate. Apart from woodchips burning by Arabic market, plantation kynam will be another added value if introduced into medication, with this quality (5-year harvest), i estimate the price will not nose dive to USD1~2/gm.
Q29. Did someone extract Agarwood oil from plantation kynam for Middle East market?
A29. At this moment not available. But, effort is being arranged. China market is using SFE method which is not favorable to Arabic market.
Q30. Does it mean Kynam is not suitable to produce oil?
A30. No. If the the harvest is good enough to be marketable quality into woodchips, it will demand much higher price than turning into oil extraction. Only those lower quality harvest will be turning into oil extraction. Even so, Kynam oil is sold at USD90/gm in China (consumer price).
Q31. During harvesting, will i chop down the entire tree and replant afresh?
A31. You can harvest the tree partially or chop down the entire tree in one go, but, you dont have to replant since tree will undergo coppicing, new shoot will regrow, leaving a gap about 20cm above the ground is recommended.
Q32.
A32.
Q33. Will the kynam tree fail to form resin after being stressed number of years?
A33. As long as the scion is taken from the kynam tree, genetically it will form resin as usual, normally 6 months you should be able to see the formation. However, climate in each country, soil texture, sun light intensity are the few factors impacting the quality of resin formation.
Q34. Can you guarantee 100% kynam formation on each tree?
A34. Once the tree has direct external injury; the tree body will inevitably begin to produce Kynam-xiang in the wound.
Q35. How could I be sure that all the seedlings are authentic and from the same quality?
A35. Seedlings are propagated from the branches which genetically should be the same gene from its mother tree. In terms of quality, there are many factors. Method of stressing plays an important factor. How to generate a good quality in resin formation where one cannot be greedy to produce in quantity. Quality goes inversely proportional to Quantity. One gotta be clear which Q is of your priority, then perform the next course of action accordingly. If you cannot catch the cheetah, don’t blame the cheetah runs too fast.
Q36. How can I be sure that the branches (scions) i am getting are authentic, they could be normal aquilaria branches?
A36. This fake grafting happened in China before. But, nowadays kynam is a norm in China, no point of doing this. In Malaysia, you look for reliable source which is NOT money driven.
Q37. There are more than 100 varieties of kynam in the market, some are obsolete species (low resin production), it is true ?
A37. Yes. Some kynam varieties yield result in shorter time, some kynam species will disappoint you, look for reliable service provider to select the appropriate species.
Q38. What is the recommended planting distance ?
A38. In China, many growers had the planting distance 70cm x 120cm or 100cm x 100cm, some will suggest 150cm x 150cm. If you are looking for quality products, more leaves are required to undergo photosynthesis to produce “food”. So, wider planting distance 240cm x 240cm is recommended.
Q39.
A39.
Q40. Do i have to apply inoculant to the kynam tree?
A40. Absolutely NO. It is self-inoculation, only physical stress is required, for instance … drilling.
Q41. I have planted the traditional species, what should i do?
A41. If your trees were planted lessor than 3 years, the chances to upgrade the trees to kynam is relatively high by grafting on site. In China, the traditional agarwood trees are gradually being replaced by the Kynam agarwood trees. Ever since the breakthrough of kynam grafting in 2012, no one has thought about planting traditional agarwood. “Traditional agarwood planting” of the past is now… history or better yet, archeology.
Q42. How much is the upgrading charge per tree?
A42. Tree upgrading is only applicable for local (Malaysia) customers due to various reasons. The upgrading work requires frequent monitoring, therefore, it is practical only if performed locally. As of now, we are knowledgable with tree trunk diameter smaller than 30cm at a price of MYR60/tree, with the conditons … degree of weed management is reasonably controlled and minimum quantity of 600.
Q43. What do you suggest for oversea customers who interested with trees upgrading?
A43. My team will be with you practically on the actual site to show and teach, apart online guidance from time to time when in doubt. Following photos show growth of a tree 42 months after upgrading.
Q44. I want to plant kynam and export the products to China, since it is a huge market in China?
A44. I dont buy this idea frankly. Even so it is a huge market in China, there were “many” millions of trees already planted on ground in China, will you be able to enjoy a good deal from them? I will suggest outside of China, sounds logic.
Q45. What fertilizer to be applied to care for the kynam seedlings?
A45. Pls refer .. https://gaharujinkou.com/cultivated-agarwood/manuring-program/
Q46. Do you form an associate / agent in any other country to promote kynam?
A46. No. As of today.
Q47. Have you done any agreement /MOU with any company abroad?
A47. No. As of today.
Q48. Can you deliver Kynam seedlings abroad?
A48. As far as i am concerned, No No NO. YES, however NOT all the countries are made possible.
Q49. What do you mean by Travel Ban (Covid 19)?
A49. We are based in Malaysia. As long as we are allowed to travel without quarantine when entering to both countries. We will dive in to perform the task. Year 2020 is gone, we only pinpoint in Malaysia.
Q50. What is the major problem with Kynam planting?
A50. Security, to get rid of thief.
Q51. Is there a kynam farm to visit in Malaysia?
A51. Yes indeed. But, due to security issue, you will be escorted to the farm upon your visit.
Q52. Can you tell me where are they (Kynam farm) in Malaysia?
A52. Yes. To be disclosed upon your arriral in Malaysia.
Q53. I don’t have time, i am curious how is the living kynam in the tree look like?
A53. Yes. I got a small plot just to quench your curiosity, 50Km away from KLIA airport.
Q54. Can you share me your customers’ contact in Kynam planting or upgrading?
A54. No. I am NOT allowed to do so.
Q55. What if i want to plant kynam outside of agarwood growing region, Hawaii / Ghana for instance?
A55. Since seed breeding did not work. Your very first task … to ensure rootstock is available with you, you need rootstock to graft Kynam, else you can’t multiply them !! Rootstock could be…
- seedlings by seed grown in polybag
- existing agarwood tree planted on ground.
You need to be patient 9~12 months to grow the seedlings to reach > 1.0cm in diameter, reasonable size for grafting. When you have this condition fulfilled, we will take care the rest, provided smooth sailing with custom clearance.
Q56. Can i purchase rootstock seeds from you?

Q81. In the field, what are the differences Kynam VS Ordinary agarwood ?
A81. To name a few ..
- The amount of oil is several times that of ordinary agarwood
- As long as there is a physical hole drilling, resin will be formed, without any man-made inoculant.
- Resin will be formed in the branches when they are punched, and they can be harvested within 18 months.
- The agarwood smells strong even without burning, the quality is superior to many top wild agarwood, the only disadvantage is that the price is still too expensive.
- To chew a tiny splinter of Kynam piece you can find in your tongue tip several tastes like acrid, sweet, bitter and somewhat sour. But for ordinary agarwood, you can find bitter taste only.
- The cost of producing Kynam agarwood is half of that man-made inoculated agarwood.
- The main trunk does not need to be cut off, and the new branches can be harvested every year. The older the tree, the higher the quality and output will be.

Q94. Why am I NOT enjoying the real aroma of cultivated kynam, if I were used to traditional Middle East style fumigation ( large chunks of wood directly on top of hot charcoal) ?
A94. Ordinary agarwood is high in resin .. low in oil content, whereas Kynam is the other way round, rich in oil .. low in resin. When you step into the Journey Of Oud, new approach is needed if you were to appreciate top-quality wood (Kynam). Kynam is NOT meant for burn but instead very gently to heat them. Kynam is usually heated slowly, on low heat. Electrical burners are the best choice, as opposed to charcoal or fire. The optimal heat burning temperature for Kynam is between 70°C to 90°C (or 120°C max). If you have different settings, start from the lowest and increase the heat gradually.

Q98. How did you “promote” Kynam into Malaysia ?
A98. Let the photos speak by themselves ..
Q99. Is Kynam planting much expensive than normal agarwood?
A99. Following chart will tell …

This simple illustration is sufficient to judge is Kynam planting relatively expensive ?
Selection outpaces hard work in agriculture. It is okay to outgrow those crops which had the chance to grow with you. Love yourself enough to walk away from any species that do not appreciate your value or see your worth. Don’t shrink yourself to fit into the little box later.
Q100. Is Malaysia much advanced than Thailand and how is agarwood industry in Malaysia ?
A100. In Malaysia, many agarwood cultivators kayaking themselves in the middle of the ocean, being too expensive to pay for inoculant or leave the agarwood farm unattended. I posted this page in 2013 .. https://gaharujinkou.com/2013/07/29/agarwood-investors-or-growers-must-read/
Sharks are killed for its fins, and discarding the rest of the shark back into the ocean … because the rest of the shark has little value relative to that of its fins. This analogy applies in the following ..

in agarwood industry, NOT the entire tree will yield marketable quality woodchip. Performing inoculation in one go is like harvesting the entire shark and demanding supreme shark fin price for the entire fish, which drives buyers away to Thailand instead of Malaysia. For those new comers (Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Philippines) venturing into agarwood industry, my advise .. don’t be “monkey see monkey do”. Highly possible the one who you meet may NOT explore you enough about inoculation’s harvests. Needless to say, if he is one of the inoculation service providers …
.. to be sustainable and profitable in agarwood industry, this is how Thailand is practising, Oud oil USD5,000 / kg in Thailand Vs USD12,000 / kg in Malaysia. Being a wise consumer, where do you want to go ?
Click this link .. https://gaharujinkou.com/natural-infection/
Conclusion, in terms of economic value and quality, inoculation may not be a good solution to be precisely pronounced.
For ordinary agarwood species, patience and knowhow are equally required to selectively produce marketable quality woodchip.
Ah T
